The Old City

The high density and ancient structures of the Old City served to preserve a diversity of natural systems within it: living roofs, wet habitats, nesting sites and more. Despite the Old City’s compactness, there is a variety of flora: ancient trees in the coutyards of churches and in cemeteries, orchards, cultivated gardens, olive tree groves, and wall flora. A variety of birds live and migrate through the Old City along with populations of amphibians and reptiles. The oldest community of common swifts flourishes in the Western Wall. Pedestrian and public transportation acces. Restricted parking facilities available. . Urban Nature site No. 41.
