Cable Car Museum

The Mount Zion Cable Car Museum is situated in a small building opposite the Old City Walls that operated a cable car in Jerusalem during the War of Independence in 1948 to supply food and equipment for defenders of Mount Zion, and to evacuate the wounded. The secret cable was stretched every night during the siege and lowered to the Hinnom Valley at dawn to prevent it from being hit by bullets of Jordanian snipers. The cable car was disabled after the war, but remained a military secret until 1972. The museum contains the original cable and a variety of photos documenting this chapter of the War of Independence. Admission is free.
