Beit Mahanaim

The stately building that today serves and the offices of the Ministry of Education and Culture, at 34 Shivtei Yisrael, once used to be the home of the German Protestant banker, Johannes(Jacob) Frutiger, one of the wealthiest residents of Jerusalem in the 19th century. Built in 1885, the building represents one of the most luxurious private residences ever built in Jerusalem. Situated in a large courtyard, surrounded by many ornamental trees, including cedars of Lebanon, the magnificent building testifies to a once-upon-a-time life of opulence and grandeur.
